ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: Central ossifying fibroma is a lesion in which diagnosis has proved intriguing and unclear for presenting clinical, radiographic, and even histopathological similarities to other types of lesions such as the fibrous dysplasia of bone and cement-bone dysplasia. It is a benign neoplasm of uncertain etiology and slow development in which the mandible is affected more frequently than the maxilla. We described a case of central cemento-ossifying fibroma involving the right mandible of a thirty-five-female patient by presenting its clinical, radiographic, and histological characteristic sand discussing some differential diagnoses.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: The peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) is a rare, reactive and inflammatory gingival overgrowth, arising on the interdental papilla, from cells derived of the periodontal ligament. Usually its diameter is less than 1.5 cm. It's uncommon in newborns, frequently occurring in teenagers and young adult. The purpose of this report is to describe a case of FOP in a six months old baby. She had a nodular lesion, located on the gingival mucosa of the lower incisor area, of approximately 1.5 cm; it was firm, smooth, pedunculated, with an equal color of the underlying mucosa. A neonatal tooth had been removed four months back. Although FOP is a rare injury, it can be found in infants with less than one year of age, which is why it is important to make the right diagnosis, and an opportune treatment, to avoid further complications due to its early establishment and rapid growth.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Central ossifying fi broma is a bony tumor, which is believed to be derived from the cells of the periodontal ligament. Central ossifying fi broma behaves like, a benign bone neoplasm. Th is bone tumor consists of highly cellular, fi brous tissue that contains varying amounts of calcifi ed tissue resembling bone, cementum, or both. Central ossifying fi bromas of the mandible are common; however, they are rare in the maxillary region however they are common in the mandible, have got a female predeliction and is usually seen in the age between 35 and 40 years of age. In this report, we have described a 35-year-old female with minimal clinical symptoms diagnosed as central ossifying fi broma in the anterior maxillary region.

ABSTRACT

The loss of much of the mandibular bone, is due to the need for bone resection or by other factors such as the occurrence of injuries, directly affects the lives of patients. Even with the continuous improvement of materials, development of new technologies and surgical techniques, treatment of these large lesions and bone loss is still a major challenge for the surgeon. In this sense, the objective of this study was to report two clinical cases of patients, a central ossifying fibroma of the mandible who underwent mandibular resection and treated by placement of a reconstruction plate system 2.4mm. The second case involved loss of substance because the patient has been the victim of injury by firearms (FAF), evolving with fracture fixation system placed in the first surgery. In the second surgical time the patient underwent bone reconstruction of the defect associated with the placement of new fixation. Thus, we can say that reconstructive procedures are important tools for treatment of patients.

ABSTRACT

Juvenile ossifying fibroma (JOF) is a rare fibro-osseous neoplasm that arises within the craniofacial bones. Two distinct histopathological variants have been described; trabecular JOF and psammomatoid JOF (PsJOF). The later occurs predominantly in craniofacial skeleton and rarely in jaws and more so in mandible (50% of the times than that in maxilla). Here we report a rare case of PsJOF in mandible body ramus region with its unique radiographic characteristics to help the diagnostician approach the diagnosis very closely for this rare entity. The tumor has been present since 1 year with unilocular radiographic appearance; having homogeneous ground-glass appearance with higher imaging, without any focal radio-opacity and inferior alveolar canal was displaced but still intact. Thus these lesions can expand to large sizes even without maturing to its radiopaque stages and without destruction of adjacent vital structures although displacing them.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) is a relatively uncommon gingival growth that is considered to be reactive in nature and appear secondary to irritation or trauma. It presents as an exophytic growth with smooth surface. POF in older age group, observance of calcification in radiograph of excised specimen, pathologic migration, mobility and size greater than 2 cm is an occasional entity. The article presents such a rare case of POF in a 60-year-old female patient which was treated by surgical excision. This case contradicts the logic that this lesion occurs in teenagers and in second and third decades of life

ABSTRACT

Peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) is a solitary over growth of the gingiva known to arise from the cells of the periodontal ligament. The lesions usually start as a painless overgrowth of the interdental papilla unless associated with trauma and gradually involve the other counter parts of the gingiva. The lesion is more considered to be an inflammatory or reactive process rather than to be neoplastic. Here, the authors present a unique case of multiple POF in a young male adult aged 24 years where surgical excision was carried out quadrant wise. The biopsy specimen from multiple sites revealed similar histopathologic features consistent with POF, but also with the multicentric presentation of POF, which is a unique phenomenon. Multicentric variant of POF is indeed a rare case being only the second case so far which has been documented. Management of such case needs a multidisciplinary approach to prevent the recurrence along with regular long time follow-up.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) is a reactive hyperplasia of connective tissue containing areas of bone. It originates from the periodontal ligament. It occurs frequently in the second and third decades, predominantly in females. It appears as a sessile or pedunculated lesion, circumscribed, smooth or ulcerated, firm, and the color of the mucosa, asymptomatic. Located in the gum, usually in interdental papillae. In most cases no underlying bone is injured. We report a case of a male patient aged 47 who are referred by your dentist treated for an injury to the jaw. The patient reported onset of illness for about a year, which begins with an enlargement of the gums, asymptomatic, bleeding and teeth associated with tooth mobility. Extra-oral examination showed an increase in volume of the left cheek that produces facial asymmetry. The oral examination shows tumoral lesion of nature that emerges from the buccal gingiva distal to the tooth 28 to 25, approximately 3 cm in diameter, circumscribed, red, bleeding and ulcerated surface. Radiographic examination reveals a large alveolar bone resorption resulting in tooth mobility 25, 27 and 28. Was raised as a provisional diagnosis: Peripheral giant cell lesion as a differential diagnosis: peripheral ossifying fibroma, pyogenic granuloma. The action to take was surgical removal of the lesion for subsequent histopathological study extractions of teeth 25, 27 and 28. The importance of this case the clinical presentation and the large bone destruction that occurred, a condition that determined the extractions of the teeth involved, a fact which is unusual for this type of pathology

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Gingival growths are one of the most frequently encountered lesions in the oral cavity. Most of these lesions are innocuous, but some do have malignant potential. Different lesions with similar clinical presentations make it difficult to arrive at a correct diagnosis. One of the infrequently occurring gingival lesions is peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF). Lesions with histological features similar to POF have been given various names, adding to the confusion. We report the varied clinicopathological features of 3 cases of POF, discuss the contentious nomenclature and investigate the possible etiopathogenesis of this disease. CASE DESCRIPTION: Three cases of gingival growths (POF) are reported. Two of the lesions occurred in the maxillary anterior region, while the third occurred in the mandibular posterior region. Two of the cases showed radiographic evidence of bone loss. An excision biopsy was performed in all three cases. CONCLUSION: Because the rate of recurrence for peripheral ossifying fibroma is 8% to 20%, close postoperative monitoring is required. It is also necessary to use consistent and specific nomenclature in the literature to avoid confusion and the loss of important data.

ABSTRACT

Cemento-ossifying fibromas (COFs) are benign lesions affecting the jaws and other craniofacial bones. They commonly affect adult females between the third and fourth decade of life, predominantly occurring in the premolar/molar region of the mandible. Most of the lesions typically show slow and often expansile growth, centrally within the jaw and characteristically behave in a benign form, but occasionally they may present as an aggressive gigantiform lesion. Radiographically, they appear as well-defined unilocular or multilocular intraosseous masses. The lesion is invariably encapsulated and of mixed radiolucent densities. The tumor may grow quite extensively; thus, the term "aggressive" is sometimes applied. Surgical resection is the treatment of choice. They are insensitive to radiotherapy and recurrences are uncommon. Clinical, radiographic and histopathologic features of COF and other fibro-osseous lesions are overlapping and may cause confusion in classification, diagnosis and treatment.

ABSTRACT

This paper describes the treatment of a male patient, 45 years old, who showed up at the office complaining about gingival bleeding. No relevant information was detected in the inter- view and the extra-oral examination. The intra-oral examination revealed a firm nodule (t.scrn x 1,Ocm) at the marginal gingiva of the buccal aspect of the lower incisors (between 41 and 32). The color of the lesion was similar to the oral mucosa and a gingival recession was asso- ciated with the buccal aspect of tooth 31. After root scaling and dental hygiene orientation, the diagnostic hypotheses were evaluated and indicated a good prognosis with low chance of recurrence. Thus, the adopted surgical approach included the nodule removal and the root co- verage of tooth 31 recession, by the laterally positioned flap technique, at the same procedure. The histopathological diagnosis of the lesion was peripheral ossifying fibroma. Ten months after surgery, no complications were reported and significant root coverage oftooth 31 recession was obtained without recurrence of the lesion.

ABSTRACT

Ossifying fibromyxoid tumor of soft parts in an uncommon tumor with a benign behavior but with a tendency to relapse. We report a 76 years old female presenting with a growing mass located in the anterior portion of the neck that was excised. The pathological study disclosed an anaplastic thyroid cancer. The patient received chemotherapy and was lost from follow up. Nine years later, she presented with progressive dysphagia. A neck CT scan showed a mass in the left thyroid base that completely included the cervical esophagus. The patient was operated and the mass was excised. The pathological diagnosis disclosed an ossifying fibromyxoid tumor.
